Xwmélchsten can translate to mean "rough water at the mouth of the river." This was a good village to fish. Our people used to use fishing traps (long and cylindrical in size). We used to catch flounder, sole and crabs. We used to hunt ducks here. We would trade ducks for clams. We would gather eelgrass. In nearby mountains we would hunt deer and grouse. We used to have a shaker church where the old White Spot was at Marine and Taylor Way. Capilano Canyon was a place to seek spiritual guidance.
